The American rocker Ronnie James Dio died on Sunday, age 67 of stomach cancer. Heavy metal icon, he was lead singer of the band Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell and Dio.

The news of death was released by the musician's wife, Wendy and the singer's agent, Maureen O'Connor. "My heart is broken. Ronnie is gone at 7:45 am, "said the wife of the artist in a statement.

Dio started his career in the '70s as a singer and bassist of the band Elf, with whom he recorded three albums. Later she moved to the Rainbow group, invited by Ritchie Blackmore (ex Deep Purple).

The rocker was also lead singer of Black Sabbath, with whom he recorded four albums. Dio replaced Ozzy Osborne, who left the group in 1979.
